Help Wanted: Friends Used Book Stores
Interested in an exciting part time paid position (25-30/hrs. week) with the Friends of the Johnson County Library? The Friends are looking for a person to oversee operations at two used book stores located in Merriam and South Overland Park.

Preferred Qualifications include:
•    Enjoyment in working with and training volunteers
•    Experience in retail sales management
•    Good customer service skills
•    Creativity to develop promotional materials
•    Interest in books and working in a library setting

2007 Bookmark Contest Winners

The Johnson County Library and the Friends of the Johnson County Library are pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 Bookmark Design Contest. The contest is an annual part of the Library’s celebration of National Library Week in April and winners are announced at the beginning of the Summer Reading Program. The winners were honored in a ceremony at the Metcalf South Shopping Center, on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, just prior to the opening of the Friends Only Preview Night of the Sizzlin' Summer Book Sale, cosponsored by the Friends and the Library. You can pick up a copy of your favorite bookmark at any Johnson County Library location while supplies last.

Read and RecycleDonate your used books to the Johnson County Library!

Recycle your used books and audio visual materials by donating them to the Johnson County Library for the Friends book sales and book stores. Items must be in good condition: paperback and hardback, children's and adult fiction and non-fiction, repair manuals, craft books, cookbooks, westerns, biographies, history, science, computer and business books, travel, art, music, religion, romance, gardening, large print, books on tape, VHS videos, CDs, DVDs. (Sorry no texbooks older than 3 years and no magazine accepted.) Take to the Antioch Library or any other Johnson County Library location. For more information call (913) 261-2319.

2006 marked the 50th anniversary of the Friends of the Library. In celebration of this anniversary, you shared your memories of the Johnson County Library! Your submission have been posted on the Library Web site.

Can you help?

The Friends of the Library has many opportunities for volunteers:

  • Book Sales – set up, merchandise, cashier

  • Book Stores – cashier, stock, price

  • Book Sorting – sort and categorize donated books

  • Advocacy Committee – help to develop advocacy plan and tactics, write letters of support, contact law makers and legislators in support of the library

  • Annual Meeting Committee – assist with planning and hosting Friends annual fall meeting

  • Adopt-A-Park Committee - help clean up Merriam's Historic Plaza Park with other Friends members

  • Membership Committee – help recruit new members, develop membership materials, staff Friends information tables

  • Mailings – label FriendsLine and other mailings
